This ancient hitch is the simplest of all binding knots. It is actually an overhand knot tied around, or through, the object with its running end on the upside. It stays tied only under a constant strain on the standing part. The Self-tightening Half Hitch can be used for hanging static loads, such as grain sacks. ABoK #514

Step 1: Pass the running end around the object from behind.

Step 2: Continue around the standing part and through the loop.

Step 3: Pull the running end upward to tighten the knot.

Step 4: The Self-tightening Half Hitch is complete.
