A good hitch for attaching a rope to a thick post, such as a tree or a ship mast. The hitch doesn’t jam and can easily be undone, but it’s trustworthy only when the ends are permanently loaded. Seize the ends with a twine for additional security.
Pass the running end around the object from behind, then under the standing part.
Pass around the object from behind again and thread through the loop from above.
Pass over the standing part, then under it and through the loop to make a half hitch.
Make another half hitch the same way.
Seize the ends with a twine.
Tighten the knot.
The Mast Hitch is complete.
