A good hitch for attaching a rope to a thick post, such as a tree or a ship mast. The hitch doesn’t jam and can easily be undone, but it’s trustworthy only when the ends are permanently loaded. Seize the ends with a twine for additional security. ABoK #1195

Step 1: Pass the running end around the object from behind, then under the standing part.

Step 2: Pass around the object from behind again and thread through the loop from above.

Step 3: Pass over the standing part, then under it and through the loop to make a half hitch.

Step 4: Make another half hitch the same way.

Step 5: Seize the ends with a twine.

Step 6: Tighten the knot.

Step 7: The Mast Hitch is complete.
